Signing the register on the wedding day

Kelly and Daniel were married in Somerset. They had been planning the day for six months, but at the last minute their plans were thwarted by the Ash Cloud.

Daniel’s mum was on holiday in Morocco and couldn’t fly home in time for the wedding because of the Icelandic eruption.

The wedding went ahead, without Daniel’s mum, but was a very ‘emotional occasion.’

The Revd Val Plumb, Vicar of Stogumber Church married the couple, while Daniel’s mum sat, totally distraught, on a beach. She managed to get home four days after the wedding.

Kelly and Val began to talk about a blessing which could include Daniel’s mum. ‘Val came straight back and said it was booked for two weeks later,’ said the delighted Kelly.

‘We had the bells, an organ, choir and flowers all for free – Revd Val was absolutely brilliant.’

Val asked her congregation, ‘How would you feel about having a wedding blessing instead of the normal Sunday service?’ and the church was packed.

The blessing re-enacted the wedding, except a candle was lit when the register would normally be signed.

‘Having Daniel’s mum there made a big difference,’ said Kelly, ‘and the blessing definitely made up for her missing the first wedding.’
