We had a dream wedding for less than £5k!

KT and Steve

Katie and Steve

Savvy shopping meant KT and Steve Allen had the wedding of their dreams for just £5,000. With the average wedding now breaking the £20,000 mark, this was a considerable saving.

"When we started phoning around for quotes we realized why weddings were so expensive. The cost of marrying in a church is minimal it's all the other extras that cost the money. So we made a shortlist of what we really wanted at our wedding and then scoured the internet for bargains and turned our hands to making things."

"We saved so much on doing things ourselves and shopping around and were able to have all the things we wanted at our wedding, but at a fraction of the cost. We got ideas from wedding shows, but found ways to recreate the effect much more cheaply. Ebay is fantastic for all sorts of things, and even has specialist pages for weddings. There's no need to postpone your wedding because of the cost", added KT.

We wanted the usual trimmings for our wedding, but we'd just finished university and were not in full time work, so we had a very limited budget

For some of KT's shopping tips, see the cost-saving ideas page. The Revd Jan Harney was a new Vicar at the time of KT and Steve's wedding and theirs was the first marriage ceremony she had overseen. She said: "This delightful young couple had won my heart when I visited them. They had done so many creative DIY things to bring the wedding into their budget, including the cake and flowers. It was a wonderful day."

An enthusiastic supporter of marriage, Jan is now a blogging Vicar on newlyweds-uk.com
