We married at our son's christening
Rob and Lotte
Rob and Charlotte (Lotte) had agreed that they didn’t want a lot of fuss when they got married.
However, they did want a traditional white wedding, and to christen their son Jake. Lotte did her homework on the Internet and found out that a joint wedding and baptism service was possible.
By the time they approached the Revd Ian Whitehead at St Mary’s Church in Rolleston, they had a plan.
Jake was baptised in the traditional baptism service held on a Sunday. As the congregation sang the last hymn, Lotte, Rob and a few friends disappeared into the vestry.
Ian tried to look concerned and the church organist spun out the music for a little longer until it became the Bridal March and Lotte appeared at the church door in her wedding dress.
"I don’t think that many people were surprised that we have got married," said Lotte, "but they were very surprised that it happened that day. Everybody who came that day took something else away with them – and we are so grateful to them all."
As Lotte and Rob stood at the altar Ian said, "Turn round and look at the people you have just shocked!"
In his sermon the Vicar talked about the joy of spontaneity and how God can surprise us in our lives. "Ian really put us at our ease," says Lotte.
