Going to church made our wedding extra special
Ian and Becky
St Michael’s, Newburn in the Tyne valley, was special to Ian and Becky because Ian had a family connection with the vicar, the Canon John Sinclair. The couple were agreed they wanted to be married by him in that church.
But this personal connection wasn’t enough to enable the marriage to take place legally at the church, so the couple agreed to go to the Sunday worship service at St Michael’s to secure their wedding there.
Despite not being regular churchgoers, they found the services fun and enjoyable with projected pictures, a keyboard playing funky tunes and a sermon that made them laugh as well as think. 'The people were so friendly, we felt comfortable straight away,’ said Becky.
After six weeks Becky and Ian felt they wanted to carry on going to the church as they had already felt a sense of belonging there. Shortly afterwards they joined in with an Alpha Course to explore faith further.
Ian and Becky described their wedding as ‘the best day of our lives’, and it had been made all the more so because so many people from the congregation of St Michael’s were there to celebrate and pray with them.
The church’s Cub and Scout troop even arrived to form a surprise guard of honour. Canon John said, ‘I was delighted to marry Becky and Ian; I can’t imagine church without them now.’
